A naked man (model: me) in a Bronze Age (2200 to 1500BC, roughly) stone circle.

The circle is aligned with sunrise at the midwinter solstice (some people say it also aligns with the midsummer solstice). This photo was taken by my husband when we visited this Summer, and is used here with his permission.

The circles are, for many people, sites of reverence and awe, and Swinside is a place of great peace.

;-) Your picture reminded me of the cover of an album of Sigur Ros: sigur-ros-store.com/music/sig0… (Icelandic indeed) Nice music also. Until another time.;-)

Thank you! I found www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMODx8… and the band sounds interesting even though I have no clue what it's about and my Icelandic ended with Snorri Sturlsson in translation :D

There's a modern(ish) English translation by Tolkien that I read as a teenager and loved, and that's probably easier than the original :D And the eddas are totally in keeping with the stone circle setting of the picture, even if there's a few thousand years between the building of them and the Eddas :D

Interesting. Can you point me to this Tolkien translation? Tolkien is one of my favourite writers.

I did a quick search on amazon and on abebooks, didn't look really on bookfinder.

When I get a chance I'll find my copies (they are in the Further Barn) and get the ISBN for you. It might be they only havd a forward or introduction by Toklien and my memory is bad.

Um, I kind of fail at giving advanced critique on photos, but I must say, it looks very much like something you'd see in the Bronze Age (with a few more clothes, I suppose). Very primal.

Thanks! I don't think much is known about ritual nudity in the Bronze Age; certainly one can't trust the Roman accounts.

Thanks for looking! (so to speak)

I think in THAT part of the world it would have been a wee bit too cold to go about naked as part of day-to-day life. Australia, sure. But northern Europe? Hello, iceman.

oops, I never replied to this. I think if I'd talked to the people who owned the nearby farm I could perhaps have arranged to be hosed down afterwards :D

:D thanks for looking! I'd have loved to have got more dirty, but it wasn't practical I'm afraid. I'd like to go back there with a better camera, too, but it's unlikely :-( since we live in Canada. It was a lot of fun taking the picture, and also a little spiritual.

The sheep were a bit scared when anyone went near them. But they all wanted to watch me carefully. The sheep liked the stone circle, too, so when noone was around they would go into it, partly for the shade and partly to rub against the stones, and perhaps partly because they were drawn to the spirit of the place.

Thanks for looking!

Lovely shot, and superb location. I must say, the sheep peeping out are a great extra. I know this would mean post-production, which you might not be into, but for myself, I'd consider bringing the colour saturation up slightly, and possibly thinking about the sky. There's an uneven-ness in the tone that I can't quite work out. No one could say this isn't an interesting photo though. It's good to see a powerful location like this used for nude photography.

Thanks for looking, and for your comments!

I did already increase the saturation and contrast a little, but I didn't want to go too far. The unevenness in the sky is unfortunately a flaw that has developed in my camera; I had hoped it was just a dirty lens, but no, it's probably mildew on the CCD or something. It's one of those locations that make me wish we'd rented an EOS1 for our holiday!

PS: the following few days we stayed in Disley, near Manchester, on the edge of the Peak district :D
