Crossed Wires

close-up of piano wires (piano strings as they are sometimes called) in my baby grand piano. They are a little dusty, but how often do you dust the inside of your piano?

Crossed wires, of course, is also the expression for when you are on the telephone with soeone and can hear another unrelated conversation, a very irritating and confusing situation, and it's come to be a general term for a misunderstanding or failure to communicate.
